Governor Apologizes for Forced Sterilizations

Governor John Kitzhaber apologized on behalf of the state to the over 2,600 Oregonians who underwent forced sterilizations during the 60 years in which the practice was permitted. The apology occurred on December 2 in a formal ceremony in the Governor’s office at the capitol. It was attended by over 100 disability advocates and victims of forced sterilization.

Ballot Measure 28

On October 15, 2002, Governor Kitzhaber signed into law House Bill 5100 that contains $310 million cuts in state spending. An additional $22 million in cuts will also be necessary due to the declining economy. Most of these cuts will go into effect on February 1, 2003. . . .
